John Sandford, Author – Early Life, Journalism, and the Pulitzer Prize
According to CelebrityNetWorth.com, John Sandford’s net worth is approximately $6 million – evidence of what a success he’s become as an author. That’s also revealed by the fact that he’s written over 40 books, all of which have ended up on the New York Times bestseller list.
However, Sandford’s skills as a writer didn’t start with his first novel. Rather, they started back when he worked as a journalist. Before he published his first novel in 1989, Sandford was awarded the Distinguished Writing Award of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1985. Then, in 1986, he won the Pulitzer Prize in journalism and was a finalist for the prize again in 1980.
Sandford, the pen name of John Camp, was born and raised in Iowa. He went to college and earned a bachelor’s degree in history and literature, as well as a master’s in journalism. In the 1970s, he worked for the Miami Herold and then became a features reporter, and then a daily columnist, for The Saint Paul Pioneer Press in Minneapolis.
During his first year as a journalist in Minneapolis, Sandford became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism for his series on Native American life and culture. In 1985, he wrote the series that earned him the Pulitzer Prize. He followed a family around for a year during the Midwest farming crisis. His series was entitled “Life on the Land: An American Farm Family.”
In 1989, Sandford transitioned to part-time journalist work and left the following year to pursue fiction writing full-time.
John Sandford: Bloody Genius – What Readers Should Know About Sandford’s 2019 Release
John Sandford, the author of three beloved fiction series, has released the latest novel in his Virgil Flowers series.
John Sandford’s Bloody Genius follows the detective Virgil Flowers as he investigates the death of “a renowned and confrontational scholar” at a local University.
As he investigates, he finds himself surrounded by people who are wildly impassioned, zealots in their fields (science and medicine) who are completely opposed to one another.
What’s caused the debate and the ensuing unrest? Will Flowers be able to identify the murderer amongst the group of maniacal academics?
Readers who want to find out more will need to check out the book! Thankfully, they won’t have a hard time finding it (or any other Sandford books) on Audiobook Store.
What People Love About John Sandford’s Books
What do people love about John Sandford’s books? Here are just a few of the reviews from his three series.
John Sandford Prey Series Review
What are people saying about the Prey series, including John Sandford’s Neon Prey, which was released just a few months ago?
Readers on Goodreads are pretty impressed with this series, which is why there’s been such high anticipation surrounding the release of John Sandford’s Bloody Genius. The series currently carries a 4.58 out of five-star rating on Goodreads.
Readers who have reviewed this series said they like it because the characters are multi-dimensional and that there’s more going on in the book than the mystery at hand. Characters are dealing with families, relationships, and more, which make the characters and the books way more interesting and relatable
John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers Series Review
Along with the Prey series, the Virgil Flowers series is amongst Sandford’s most popular works. While it doesn’t have as high of a score as the Prey series, readers still love Virgil Flowers and his adventures.
One of the most celebrated books in this series is John Sandford’s Holy Ghost, which was released in October 2018.
Again, Sandford’s appeal is that he makes things interesting. Everything from his characters (like the wacky townspeople in Holy Ghost) to the intriguing mysteries that keep readers on the edge of their seats. In fact, one reader said they devoured Holy Ghost and didn’t know if they’d be able to make it until Sandford’s next release.
John Sandford’s Kidd Series Review
Besides the Prey and the Virgil Flowers series’, readers love John Sandford’s Kidd series, one that ran from 1989 to 2003. The series consists of four books and has a score of 4.44. out of five stars on Goodreads.
Readers have stated that this is Sandford’s least popular series but they’re not sure why. Some of those who gave the series a low score, to begin with, ended up giving it a higher score once they gave it a second try. So, for some, it’s a hard series to get into but readers seem to be rewarded if they stick with it.
How John Sandford Became Such a Popular, Prolific Author
Many of John Sandford’s books have landed on the New York Times bestseller list. Why is that? How is it that he’s able to publish so many books each year?
For one thing, Sandford is an avid reader, having read 126 library books in one summer at one point in his life. Authors who love to read know what makes them fall in love with a book and they strive to put the same touch into their own writing.
Second, Sandford is married to a writer. He and his wife often write together, which keeps the creative juices flowing.
Readers who love to write should take heart as they have something in common with Sandford. If they keep expanding their knowledge by reading engaging, well-written books, they’re more likely to be able to create something that will appeal to other readers as well.
